Sony Announces Metaverse Push to Connect better with Gamers
In its most recent Annual Corporate Strategy Meeting, Sony Corporation unveiled its plans to take a more focused approach towards Metaverse-inspired experiences as part of its entertainment strategy.
The electronics giant intends to establish a solid place in the Metaverse Industry by leveraging its Playstation brands. Since Sony Playstation has one of the biggest install user bases in the world, it would provide a good foundation for this metaverse push.
However, the company is currently lagging behind its competitors in the field. For instance, Meta is developing hardware to provide customers with metaverse experiences and it also owns the Oculus VR headset Brand, which gives Oculus customers exclusive access to the company's metaverse flagship app "Horizon Worlds."
Sony Chief Executive Kenichiro Yoshida said at an annual strategy meeting this week:
"The metaverse is at the same time a social space and live network space where games, music, movies and anime intersect. The company intends to leverage the unique strengths provided by its diverse businesses and expertise in game technology… creating new entertainment experiences in the area of the metaverse.”
Sony’s strategic approach for Metaverse Push also includes its collaboration with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine, which is famous for enabling some of the industry’s most advanced games. Last month, Sony Corporation and KIRKBI, the Lego maker, both invested $1 million into Epic. In addition, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney claimed at the time that the investments would help them expedite their work on the metaverse.
Sony is working on PlayStationVR2, a new virtual reality headgear for its gaming platform. While the exact date of its debut is unknown, it is expected to play a vital role in delivering superior metaverse-type experiences than competing Meta Quest VR gadgets.
