Meet Symbiogenesis - a Web3 title by Square Enix

Guess what? Final Fantasy creator Square Enix has announced its first NFT game called Symbiogenesis. With that, the Japanese gaming giant is officially taking a deeper foray into blockchain gaming.

According to the announcement, Symbiogenesis is a digital art experience that allows players to collect in-game characters as NFTs. Not only can these NFTs be used as profile pictures (PFPs), but they are also playable characters that will form part of the game's interactive lore.

"The art can be used for social media profile pictures (PFP) and as a character in a story that takes place in an alternate world where the player can 'untangle' a mystery by completing missions that revolve around questions of the monopolization and distribution of resources. With each strategic move players make, more of the story unfolds," wrote Square Enix in a press release

Though details are scant, the company plans to build Symbiogenesis on Ethereum, with the game slated to launch on PC and mobile devices in Q1 2023.

What does the community say?

As usual, traditional gamers are quick to express their hatred toward the new NFT project by Square Enix. Some simply called it "crap", while others couldn't stress enough that "NFTs are a scam" and that launching such projects would "tarnish" the firm's reputation.

However, some took a more positive view of the upcoming game. As Twitter user Frgt10 said: "Don't fade the early alpha."

The journey into Web3

Square Enix turned to Web3 late last year and has since made some key investments to explore the nascent industry. In May, the company sold off its Tomb Raider IP and more for $300 million before teaming up with Enjin to launch its first NFT project in July.

Shortly after, it became the 21st node validator for blockchain gaming firm Oasys. The company also reiterated its focus on NFT gaming in the 2022 Annual Report.

It remains to be seen how its NFT ventures will pan out. But from the looks of it, nothing seems to be stopping Square Enix from going Web3.
