WePlay Media is bound to be part of Animoca Brands

Leading blockchain game investor Animoca Brands has announced the acquisition of MotoGP Championship Quest developer - WePlay Media. According to the agreement, the move is part of an effort to foster user engagement in motorsport. 

Launched in 2014, WePlay Media is an Arizona-based mobile game studio founded by Graeme Warring and Mark DeSimone. Their global hit MotoGP Championship Quest is a free-to-play motorcycle racing game based on the MotoGP brand. So far, it has amassed over 50 million downloads across mobile platforms with around 1.2 million monthly active users worldwide. 

Through this acquisition, WePlay Media will work with Animoca Brands' REVV Motorsport team, who is currently running the blockchain game MotoGP Ignition. This will allow Animoca to build a more integrated experience for MotoGP Ignition players and beyond. 

On top of that, the acquisition also helps Animoca to expand its existing relationship with Dorna Sports as a sponsor, NFT licensor, collectible cards provider, and blockchain game developer and publisher of the MotoGP brand. 

An exciting development for WePlay Media and MotoGP Championship

Interestingly, MotoGP's latest Global Fan Survey shows that 79% of respondents aged 16 - 24 are engaged in competitive gaming at least once per week. In fact, 54% of their fans are based in the Asia-Pacific region.

"The acquisition of WePlay Media will boost our engagement with fans of the amazing sport of MotoGP, unlocking powerful exposure in both the metaverse and traditional gaming," said Yat Siu, the co-founder and executive chairman of Animoca Brands. 

"We are gaining a unique platform to implement our Web3 strategy as we incorporate our motorsport-based REVV Token and NFT programs with the official MotoGP mobile game and deepen our strategic relationship with MotoGP."

According to Graeme Warring, the co-founder and COO of WePlay Media, the acquisition is an exciting development for both WePlay Media and the MotoGP Championship. 

"Animoca Brands has the ability to reach hundreds of millions of users in core growth demographics to expand the sport's fan base and create engagement opportunities for riders, teams, and sponsors. Our powerful reach in Asia, in particular, aligns with the largest markets in the world for motorcycle sales and fans."

Since the setback with F1 Delta Time, Animoca Brands has been focusing on improving and expanding upon the REVV Motorsport ecosystem. In May, the firm bought licensing rights for Hockenheimring, to introduce the German racetrack into future REVV games. 

One of its subsidiaries, Grease Monkey Games, even secured a grant in August to develop Torque Drift 2 - an upcoming blockchain title under REVV. Given that Animoca has just closed a $110 million funding round led by Temasek, the company is now more than ready for some serious shopping spree.
