CFDA Celebrates 60th Anniversary with an Exclusive Metaverse Fashion Event
The CFDA is putting out its first event in The Sandbox. It will be a celebration of both classic styles from the past and new technologies from the future.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) is marking its 60th anniversary in a novel way: by kicking off activation in The Sandbox metaverse. On December 19th, a month-long event titled "Fashioning the Shades of American Design" will begin. There will be 60 vintage-inspired outfits featured, all reimagined in voxel form for The Sandbox.
The CFDA collaborated with seven fashion houses to produce unique, functional one-of-a-kind (NFT) items as part of the activation. Coach, Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera, Tommy Hilfiger, Diane von Furstenberg, Vivienne Tam, and Willy Chavarria are the seven labels. The 1/1 NFTs will come with “money can’t buy” experiences like backstage passes to fashion shows and meet-and-greets with designers.

Furthermore, CFDA will auction the NFTs through the NFT platform Brand New Vision from the 12th to the 16th of December. The unique value of the NFTs has been reflected in the high starting bids, which have varied between $15,000 and $25,000. As opposed to the closed-off nature of the fashion industry, some see NFT technology as a way to open it up to more people.
The CFDA views the activation as a way to honour the past of fashion while also looking to the future utilizing Web3 technology. Not to mention, Web3 technology has already been used by some fashion designers, particularly at significant occasions like the New York and Paris fashion weeks.
Although this is the CFDA's first event in the metaverse, it was featured on Web3 news back in April when it announced a partnership with The Sandbox and Polygon, two companies that provide layer-2 scaling solutions for the Ethereum blockchain. At the time, the partnership's CEO, Steven Kolb, stated that one objective was to educate future business leaders in the Web3 industry.
