Chinese State Launches First Government-owned Metaverse
The inaugural platform is expected to drive innovation and research in metaverse technology.

Nanjing Launches Metaverse Platform
Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu province in China, has launched the China Metaverse Technology and Application Innovation Platform. Developed by the Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST) in collaboration with academic institutions and metaverse-related companies, the platform aims to drive research and development in the metaverse field.
The platform was introduced during the Nanjing 2023 Metaverse Application Co-creation Conference, which brought together over 200 metaverse experts, scholars, and business representatives from universities, research institutions, and enterprises.
The platform aims to advance metaverse-related disciplines and foster collaboration among campuses, schools, and enterprises. By promoting innovation and development in the metaverse industry, the platform aims to create new opportunities for economic growth. The Jianye District of Nanjing plans to use the platform to expand its metaverse industrial cluster.
This initiative builds upon Nanjing University's previous efforts in the metaverse space, as the university renamed its Department of Information Engineering to the Department of Metaverse Engineering in 2022.
China's Strives in the Metaverse
China has been actively involved in Web3 technologies, including the launch of its first regulated non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace in January 2023. In addition, the Shanghai Fengxian District introduced the "Tax Metaverse" last month, a virtual world aimed at improving the tax payment experience and efficiency.
Metaverse education has also gained traction in other parts of Asia. Tokyo's Todai University incorporated metaverse courses in July 2022 to equip students with skills in artificial intelligence and next-generation communication technologies. Similarly, Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea distributed NFT-based award certificates to deserving graduates in February 2022 as a gesture of recognition for their exceptional achievements.
