Decentraland Launches Smart Wearables & Portable Experiences
Smart Wearables are purchasable items that can unlock new abilities and experiences when worn by a Decentraland avatar, while Portable Experiences can be enabled for free in particular scenes in order to see hidden content, without needing to connect a wallet.

Decentraland has officially announced that 2 new significant features are now officially live: Smart Wearables and Portable Experiences.
Smart Wearables are digital clothing and accessories that players can equip on their avatars in order to unlock an ability or experience that is made with that particular wearable in mind. This makes it possible for digital fashion designers to add utility to their work in many creative ways, making clothing more than just for appearance. Some examples of what introducing this feature can bring include having a pair of glasses for exclusive access to a VIP room, or equipping a jetpack that actually lets you fly, and so on. It opens up collaboration opportunities for brands, while game developers have a new way to add variety to their gameplay by having players compete for wearables in order to unlock new weapons and similar. Early versions of this feature were previously available in events such as Metaverse Fashion Week.
To mark this official launch, Decentraland and Audius will be releasing the metaverse’s “first portable music player” in the coming weeks. This means that avatars who wear Audius smart wearable headphones will unlock the ability to listen to music available on the Audius platform while exploring the virtual world. In the Decentraland Marketplace, you’ll find Smart Wearables marked with a lightning icon in the thumbnail.
Portable Experiences are “kind of like augmented reality in the virtual world,” as they unlock a hidden part of the world, similar to Smart Wearables. With a Portable Experience enabled, a player could, for example, see certain items scattered throughout an area to collect, with the avatar doing a custom dance whenever one of them is collected. Players who don’t have it enabled won’t be able to see those items that you do, but they’ll be able to see your dance animation.
In the official blog post, Decentraland explains that the difference between the 2 new huge additions is that, whereas Smart Wearables have to be purchased, Portable Experiences can be activated for free in a specific scene, even without a wallet connected, making them “ideal for events and social gatherings.”
