Ex-Nintendo President Reveals His Position on NFTs
He noted that blockchain technology is new, but he is yet to see an NFT use case that offers value to players.

Fils-Aime is Neutral on NFTs
Former Nintendo Leader Reggie Fils-Aime has announced his position on NFTs. However, Fils took a neutral stance, according to an interview with CNET at the recent PAX West event, where he spoke about the future of Nintendo.
He expressed interest in blockchain technology, especially if it can offer a better value to players. But, he said, “There needs to be something inherently positive for the player for this as technology to take off. So, I’m not for or against NFTs. But, I want to see an example that really adds value, and I have to say, I haven’t yet seen that example.”
NFTs are a virtual representation of GIFs, memes, video clips, soundtracks, collectibles, paintings and other valuables stored on the blockchain. They are increasingly popular in token-based communities where members must hold NFTs to access activities. In addition, most blockchain-based games also use NFTs as gaming characters.
Luxury giants like Nike and Gucci have entered the web3 space creating NFTs of their products, digital merch and physical items. NFTs have certain use cases that offer a higher return to holders, but Fils-Aime didn’t mention them and decided to stay neutral with NFTs.
Fils-Aime on AR and VR
Fils-Aime spent 15 years at Nintendo, where he was Chief Operating Officer, before leaving in April 2019.
He expressed optimism about AR-based metaverse experiences over VR experiences. He said,
“I do believe [the metaverse] is going to be gaming-led, I don’t believe that it has to have an element of VR. I believe that augmented reality is going to progress much further and much faster. I’m a much bigger proponent, in part because I’ve seen great AR experiences brought to the consumer. I haven’t yet seen that wonderful VR experience that I find compelling.”
