Firefox Developer Mozilla Acquires Active Replica to Fuel its Metaverse Strategy
The legacy web developer will tap into Active Replica's expertise to develop immersive virtual events.
Legacy internet browser Firefox is the latest to embrace the metaverse
Firefox developer Mozilla has announced the acquisition of Active Replica, an immersive experience developer, to fuel its metaverse strategy.
Through this acquisition, Active Replica will join Mozilla's Hubs creator platform to create virtual events. The metaverse firm already worked with Mozilla earlier during the multi-day tech festival, Mozfest.
"The magical, immersive experiences that Active Replica has built are perfectly attuned to our increasingly distributed, remote-first world," wrote Imo Udom, Senior VP of Innovation Ecosystems at Mozilla. "Together, we see this as a key opportunity to bring even more innovation and creativity to Hubs than we could alone."
Mozilla will tap into Active Replica's expertise to create immersive experiences, helping organizations drive impact using virtual tech. In turn, the metaverse creator will leverage Mozilla's scale, talent, and ability, to bring its innovations to the market faster.
On top of that, the Firefox creator is bringing these new capabilities to the entire Hubs community. According to Mozilla, Active's technology will help accelerate in-demand work, personalized subscription tiers, onboarding improvements, and introduce new capabilities to its Hubs engine.
Active Replica was founded in 2020 by industry veterans Jacob Ervin and Valerian Denis. Before the acquisition, the company sold virtual event packages covering venue design, event planning, live entertainment, and tech support. Currently, Ervin and Denis have assumed new roles at Mozilla as senior engineering manager and product lead, respectively.
"Mozilla has long advocated for a healthier internet and has been an inspiration to us in its dedication and contributions to the open web. By joining forces with the Mozilla Hubs team, we're able to further expand on our mission and inspire a new generation of creators, connectors, and builders," said Ervin and Denis in a statement. "Active Replica will continue to work with our existing customers, partners, and community."
