Inworld AI recently disclosed the details of a $50M fund secured by the team in March 2022. The firm has also hired John Gaeta, a special effects and entertainment pioneer, as its Chief Creative Officer. The team aims to increase the number of smarter computer-controlled characters so that players can have more extended conversations with them, making the social world much more immersive.

The firm pioneers  Ilya Gelfenbeyn, Michael Ermolenko and Kylan Gibbs, raised the fund to help import more non-player characters into gaming, metaverse, entertainment and brand experiences, thereby creating a more prosperous social environment.

Participants of the Funding Round

The fundraising was led by Section 32 and Intel Capital, and other investment angels include Founders Fund, Accelerator Investments, First Spark Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, Bitkraft Ventures, CRV, Microsoft’s M12 fund, Micron Ventures, LG Technology Ventures, SK Telecom Venture Capital, and The Venture Reality Fund.

Ilya Gelfenbeyn, Inworld CEO, commented,

“In the last year, research shows that online relationships can be as meaningful as those formed in real life. With Inworld, you can create gaming NPCs (non-playable characters), native populations for virtual worlds, virtual influencers, brand representatives, in-world guides, and digital humans that can forge relationships with users and unlock deeper engagement. This is the future of entertainment–stories that are told through characters with a rich inner life, that audiences are invited to participate in, and take immersion to the next level.”

This innovation will eliminate the repeated verses which occur with most in-game AIs. Inworld AI uses about 20 machine learning models in charge of various aspects of the personality of a character. These AI-powered characters are synonymous with the NPC in Ryan Reynolds' metaverse movie titled Free Guy. The team has partnered with MetaHuman and other avatar builders to create these characters. Finally, the company is working with some AAA game studios and hopes to commence some game projects this year or next year.
