The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) show plans to honor artists with the best metaverse performance

Who would have thought that artists and musicians would one day be recognized for their virtual performances? But that's what happened, as American cable channel MTV introduced "Best Metaverse Performance," a new competition category for its Video Music Awards (VMAs) show. BTS, Blackpink, Ariana Grande, Charli XCX, Justin Bieber, and Twenty One Pilots are the superstars on the nominations list.

According to MTV, the move was necessary as more artists opt to connect with their fans through virtual experiences in the metaverse. "We saw the opportunity to highlight and honor some of the best, most impactful executions of this - and celebrate artists who have found creative ways to use these spaces - which led to the addition of 'Best Metaverse Performance' category this year," said an MTV spokesperson.

There are six metaverse musical acts up for nomination. To list, these include "Rift Tour" ft. Ariana Grande on Fortnite, Blackpink's "The Virtual" on PUBG, BTS' Minecraft performance on YouTube, Charli XCX's virtual concert on Roblox, Justin Bieber's "An Interactive Experience" on Wave, and "Twenty One Pilots Concert Experience" on Roblox.

VMA gets its own metaverse experience too

Besides that, the MTV Video Music Awards show also announced its first-ever metaverse experience on Roblox. It was not surprising at all, given that the gaming platform already has two metaverse acts up for nomination this year. Made in partnership with Paramount Game Studios, the virtual experience is now available to all Roblox users until September 3rd, 2022.

Will metaverse performances become a pillar of the music industry?

Virtual concerts became popular during the pandemic when live, in-person performances were not possible. However, many see online concerts and entertainment becoming the music industry's mainstay as the metaverse goes mainstream.

This is especially so when virtual worlds in Web3 continue to expand and attract younger audiences. Given VMA's struggles with years of declining views, it's quite fitting as well for MTV to include the metaverse category this year.
