Neopets Metaverse Shut Down in Favor of Non-Crypto Mobile Game
In a surprising turn of events, Neopets Metaverse, an NFT game built around the beloved Neopets franchise, has been abruptly canceled. The decision, announced by the Neopets Team (TNT), has left fans questioning the reasons behind the shutdown and the future of the project. Neopets Metaverse, which had already entered its alpha stage of development, boasted over 9,000 Solana NFTs sold and had secured significant backing from prominent investors.
Neopets has undergone a management buyout as part of its transition, marking its independence after 18 years of corporate ownership. The company, previously owned by Viacom and later Jumpstart, which NetDragon acquired, is now under a new leadership team called World of Neopia, Inc. The blog post announcing the changes promises fans monthly updates, AMAs (Ask Me Anything sessions), and a brand ambassador program.
Neopets Promises Support to Web3 Community
Despite the cancellation of the NFT game, Neopets assures its commitment to supporting the Web3 community. The company plans to continue operating a Discord server for NFT holders, offering them ongoing engagement and communication. However, the fate of NFT owners in terms of refunds and benefits in the new mobile game remains uncertain. Neopets representatives mentioned the possibility of providing perks to NFT owners, such as the digital "NC" in-game currency and digital items on the platform.
As Neopets moves forward, it aims to rejuvenate its platform by launching a new homepage on July 20. Additionally, the company plans to utilize an emulator to update its old Flash games, making them playable once again. With the management buyout, Neopets hopes to shed its past corporate baggage and empower TNT with decision-making authority and brand strategy.
