Playful Studios, the developers of Creativerse, Lucky’s Tale and New Super Lucky’s Tale have not only announced a new crypto game, but they’ve also managed to secure an outstanding $46 million for their new blockchain gaming division, The Wildcard Alliance.

The funding round was led by Paradigm, with participation from Griffin Gaming Partners and Sabrina Hahn. This new division has partnered up with Polygon Studios to bring their first Web3 game, Wildcard, onto the Ethereum-based Layer 2 network.

Wildcard is a unique blend of MOBA, collectible card game and real-time strategy in which players battle it out in an arena featuring live spectators that can affect the battle. It’s played from a third-person view and has players spawn various different collectable creatures called Wildcards with the goal of destroying the opposing base. The team working on this title consists of over 100 developers who have previous experience making Age of Empires, Halo Wars, Orcs Must Die! and more.

The CEO and co-founder of The Wildcard Alliance, Paul Bettner said the following:

“Web3 platforms present a tremendous opportunity to build entertainment that can include, empower, and onboard millions of new players. Despite this opportunity, the current focus of Web3 game development tends to be on finance over fun, economy over engagement, currency over community. With Wildcard, we’re focused on fun first, building a next-generation ‘spectator sport’ to welcome the entire community of competitors, collectors, sponsors, and fans to play together.”

Paul Bettner is known for creating Words With Friends together with his brother David Bettner while they were at game development company Zynga with Friends, which they cofounded together with their cousin, Michael Chow.

Paradigm’s research partner, Dave White, commented:

“What sets Wildcard apart is an emphasis on quality and fun. Paul and the team have a proven track record building fun games at the frontier of what’s possible, and they are using Web3 tech in truly innovative ways to bring openness and accessibility to proven eSports mechanisms.”

Wildcard is currently in pre-alpha with no scheduled release date at the time of writing.
