Sipher reveals upcoming Alpha Playtest Updates

Developer Ather Labs has revealed what updates are in store for the upcoming alpha playtest of Sipher Odyssey, a looter shooter action RPG.

After undergoing a “secretive” pre-alpha playtest in the Unity game engine, the team has announced in a recent Medium post that they have switched over to the Unreal Engine, overhauling the game’s visuals with “a brighter and more colorful palette,” while also improving the UI and the overall user experience in an effort to make the game’s interface more simpler to understand and navigate.

The isometric shooter now also has a variety of new enemies and mini-bosses to face, as well as more dungeons “with better traps, obstacles, and decorations,” with most of the dungeons now being randomly-generated, the exception being “bosses, mini-bosses, and some narrative-driven levels.”

Animations for both the player’s character and the enemies have been adjusted to feel more natural, while a new feature called the Effect Status System has been introduced, adding in 6 new effects “that players and enemies could encounter during gameplay.” These are Poison, Stun, Burn, Trap, Chill and Zap. The melee system has also gotten an upgrade, meaning that combos now “feel stronger, hit harder, and are more effective.” There are also now camera effects such as zoom, shake and flash which activate depending on the action taking place on screen.

The skill system has been overhauled, making the abilities more balanced but also graphically nicer. It’ll now also be possible to utilize the boost system. This system consists of boosters, which are upgrades that allow you to customize your playstyle, making it possible to “spew poison, wreak toxic havoc across the battlefield” and more.

Some snippets of gameplay of some of the new changes included in the new version can be found in the official Medium post here.

Info on when this limited alpha playtest will commence has not been revealed at the time of writing.
