SK Telecom's Ifland Metaverse Goes Global, Launches in 49 Countries and Regions

Ifland metaverse is expanding into the overseas market

SK Telecom (SKT), the largest mobile operator in South Korea, has launched its flagship metaverse platform, ifland, in 49 countries across North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

With that, ifland is now available in English, Chinese, and Japanese for Android and iOS users. According to the announcement, SKT will utilize K-pop content, develop engaging content with overseas partners, and strengthen communication features to shape ifland into a leading social metaverse platform.

The South Korean company is now working with major telco giants, such as e& (formerly Etisalat Group), Singtel, and NTT Docomo, to develop customized features tailored to different regions worldwide.

It is also looking to offer digital content targeting the "MZ generation (Millennials and Generation Z)" through partnerships with overseas universities and international brands. For instance, SKT signed an MOU with Thailand's Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University (BSRU) and Korea's Dong-ah Institute of Media and Arts (DIMA) this month to create a global metaverse campus.

The company also updated key features of ifland, such as setting up a global lounge for newcomers, introducing 'one-on-one direct messaging' and '3D speech bubble' for ease of communication, 'live voting' feature to gather real-time feedback, and 'ifme motion sharing' feature to provide avatars with realistic facial expressions.

Every week, Ifland will celebrate its global growth with a broad range of live K-pop content, including auditions for K-pop trainees and nurturing of K-pop idols for global fans. Through ifland's SNS account, SKT plans to hold giveaway events rewarding overseas users participating in K-pop meet-ups.

As of October 2022, ifland has garnered more than 12.8 million users, a four-fold increase compared to 3 million early this year. SKT attributed this growth to the platform's unique metaverse content.

"Since its launch in Korea in July 2021, ifland has grown rapidly to become the best social metaverse in Korea by attracting users of diverse age groups as well as many different organizations," said Yang Maeng-Seok, Head of Metaverse Office at SKT. "Now, we will go beyond Korea to expand our reach in the global market to take customers' metaverse experience to the next level."

Here's a list of countries in which ifland is now available:
