Sony Music Entertainment files NFT & Metaverse Trademark Application for Columbia Records
News

Sony Music Entertainment has filed an NFT and metaverse trademark application for the Columbia Records logo to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) at the end of last month.

The filing was revealed in a tweet by Mike Kondoudis, a USPTO licensed trademark attorney and Amazon best-selling author on trademarks.

The application filed on August 30 this year reveals plans to use NFTs for authenticating downloadable live music performances as well as for authenticating downloadable music. Images and artwork depicting live musical performances are also mentioned to be backed by NFTs, and so are multimedia files in general for both music and live musical performances.

Next to these plans, the filing also mentions offering marketing services for artists, musical services, artist management, distributorship services, online music entertainment in the form of “non-downloadable sound and audiovisual recordings,” production and post-production services and the production of podcasts.

Sony Music isn’t the only music company looking to enter the field of non-fungible tokens. Last month, Universal Music Group’s Republic Records filed 2 trademark applications for NFTs, the metaverse and cryptocurrencies.

In other music and metaverse-related news, Blackpink, a South Korean music group, won the “Best Metaverse Performance” award at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.
