South Korean tech firm NHN, is renowned for developing social casino games like Hangame Poker and mobile titles including Crusader’s Quest and Guns Up! Mobile War Strategy, is making a groundbreaking move into the world of crypto gaming. With over 37 million total users across its games, NHN announced its plans to develop digital board games utilizing Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) on the Sui blockchain.
Embracing the Crypto Gaming Paradigm
NHN’s Head of Business Development, Jin Lee, highlighted that the venture into blockchain games represents a “paradigm shift” in the gaming industry. The industry has witnessed several shifts, transitioning from game copy sales to PC, console, social, feature phone, and smartphone games. Lee emphasized the company’s aspiration to combine the value created by game content and the in-game currency economy with tokenomics to establish best-case scenarios in blockchain and games.
While the firm is still exploring the integration of NFTs or crypto tokens into upcoming games, the vision is clear: to allow gamers to send items to each other as NFTs and explore the possibility of crypto token rewards. NHN aims to create games that are not just platforms for entertainment but also ecosystems where the economy of in-game currency intertwines with the innovative concept of tokenomics.
The Strategic Choice of Sui Blockchain
Essentially, NHN’s choice of the Sui blockchain, developed by Mysten Labs, aligns with its long-term vision for crypto gaming. Evan Cheng, CEO and co-founder of Mysten Labs, expressed excitement about building with NHN, emphasizing the mission to bring the benefits of Web3 to the masses and create products that attract substantial user volume. NHN joins a growing list of South Korean gaming firms like Krafton, Com2us, Wemade, Nexon, Neowiz, NCSoft, and OneUniverse, embracing blockchain gaming, with Asia poised to make up 80% of the crypto gaming player base.
