The Sandbox introduces KYC verification for landowners in its Metaverse
The Sandbox has launched KYC verification to remove malicious actors from its Metaverse for a more efficient landowner distribution.
The Sandbox has announced that it will commence KYC verification for future land sale as a measure to remove bots, fake accounts and malicious actors.
KYC verification has been a major subject of discourse in the blockchain ecosystem and different arguments have been made on whether it enshrines the guiding principles of the ecosystem or not. Many are of the opinion that one of the pillars of blockchain technology is anonymity and KYC verification negates that by making the identities of individuals available in a centralized database.
However, from the perspective of The Sandbox, the relevance of such a feature is very much understandable given the numerous fake accounts that permeates its Metaverse which can disrupts contests or scam unsuspecting members. A notable example is the Dream’s Cheating incident during one of the Speedrun contests.
Meanwhile, this is not a new development in the blockchain gaming space, more brands are demanding KYC verification from members of their communities. For example, Yuga Labs have asked Otherside land buyers to go through KYC verification and Animoca Brands also implemented KYC during the Crazy Defense Heroes rewards claiming process.
Additional information on the modality for the verification process is yet to be available, but based on The Sandbox Landowner roadmap, Land will be distributed through a raffle system for KYC verified participants in the sales.
This initiative is a vital component of The Sandbox new landowner roadmap, and will help the platform prioritize security as it seeks to onboard more landowners later this year.
