The Walking Dead: Empires Playtest Is Live With Public Development Build Launch
The playtest for The Walking Dead: Empires, a survival MMORPG, is now officially live and playable for free by downloading a public development build that is set to remain open until the game fully launches sometime in 2024.
Ember Entertainment has announced the start of the playtest for The Walking Dead: Empires, a blockchain survival MMORPG part of the Gala Games ecosystem, now downloadable in the form of a new public development build on PC.
Playtest Details
The public development build launched on November 8th at noon PST, giving everyone access to top-down survival gameplay set in AMC’s The Walking Dead. This build will remain open indefinitely until the game officially launches next year. Some updates and server resets may lead to temporary maintenance, but overall, everyone will be able to enjoy the game for free in the lead-up to the official release.
Owners of Heroes on the Ethereum network will have to bridge their assets over to GalaChain in order to be able to play with them in-game and earn permanent XP in the process. Players can bridge using the Inventory section of their Gala account, paying an Ethereum gas fee in order to complete the transaction.
Will Progress Be Reset?
According to the announcement, progress made throughout this public build will not be reset. The team specifically mentions Hero XP remaining intact, so playing now could give you an advantage once the blockchain title launches next year. However, other aspects could be reset when there are server updates going live: in-game only items, your scrap and headquarters may wind up getting restarted, though the team has said that they are “taking measures to soften the effects of any such resets.”

Anyone interested in trying out the build can do so by downloading the game from the official website or through their official page on the Gala Games website and start surviving in the walker-infested world by choosing a free hero and linking your Gala account.
When Is the Official Launch?
The official launch is planned to take place at some point in 2024, but a specific release date has not yet been determined at the time of writing.
