Meet NFT Tweet Tiles - the first Web3 integration on Twitter under new CEO Elon Musk

Guess what? In less than 24 hours after Tesla CEO Elon Musk completed his $44 billion acquisition of social media giant Twitter, the team behind the social networking site wasted no time in introducing a new blockchain feature called NFT Tweet Tiles.

According to the announcement by Twitter Dev, NFT Tweet Tiles will allow users to showcase their digital collectibles in a dedicated panel via tweets, which contains details, such as the artwork title and creator name, as well as a button that allows users to click through to a marketplace listing.

"Now testing: NFT Tweet Tiles. Some links to NFTs on @rarible, @MagicEden,@dapperlabs, and @Jumptradenft will now show you a larger picture of the NFT alongside details like the title and creator. One more step in our journey to let developers impact the Tweet experience," said Twitter Dev in a tweet on Friday.

Notably, the exciting feature is still under testing, as the company is currently working with four NFT platforms to try out the integration. This includes top Solana NFT marketplace Magic Eden, multi-chain NFT platform Rarible, Flow blockchain creator Dapper Labs, and sports-centric platform Jump Trade. However, many are quite surprised that the biggest NFT marketplace on Earth - OpenSea - did not join the pilot test this time.

Nonetheless, a Twitter representative told Decrypt that the feature is blockchain-agnostic, so all networks, be it Ethereum, Polygon, Solana, etc., are supported as long as the links come from a partnered marketplace. The representative also added that Tweet Tiles are "currently being tested with select Twitter users across iOS and web", and only those in the test group can see such integrations. The good news is there won't be a need for a Twitter Blue premium subscription to use this feature at launch.

How could NFT Tweet Tiles help in terms of Web3 adoption?

As more and more Web3 communities have found their place on Twitter, having a simple integration such as the NFT Tweet Tiles may prove to be pivotal in NFT adoption. For one, it will be much more convenient for brands and individual artists to promote their digital artworks with this new feature.

Interested buyers and collectors can simply click on the button to access the digital collectible without having to search for that particular NFT themselves. With this innovative feature, it's easier to capture degens' and non-crypto-savvy users' attention, potentially boosting NFT sales and trading volume of participating marketplaces along the way.

Of course, there is always room for improvement in this integration, as some have proposed adding a Buy / Sell button to the tile to make it easier for users to trade their NFTs directly. Imagine if you could snatch a BAYC NFT or The Sandbox virtual plot from Twitter without having to log in separately to a marketplace. Wouldn't that be much easier for you?

Besides, NFT Tweet Tiles could be easily implemented on gaming NFTs as well. According to Twitter, gaming is one of its biggest categories, with over 70 tweets per second about gaming posted on its social network in 2021.

Apart from gaming conversations, Twitter is the go-to platform for gamers, developers, and publishers to learn, discover, and create with like-minded professionals. Suppose NFT Tweet Tiles were to go live. In that case, many believe that the integration would also serve as a huge catalyst for gaming NFTs, providing significant publicity for blockchain games in the future.

Security concerns around NFT Tweet Tiles

With spam bots being so rampant on Twitter, certain users are concerned that the feature will only give rise to more NFT scams if it were to be rolled out now. On that matter, Musk actually proposed a few solutions in June that may help eliminate bots on the social media platform.

According to the new Chief Twit, there are plans in place to add an optional paid-tier service for people to prove their authenticity, which is similar to the Sybil-resistant mechanism in crypto. In addition, the billionaire is looking to make Twitter's anti-bot algorithms open to public review. It will only make sense then to introduce NFT Tweet Tiles to the masses after the company has sorted out its security issues.

About Elon Musk's love-hate relationship with NFTs

If you've been following his tweets, you will surely know that Elon Musk used to hate NFTs a lot - to the point that he mocked NFTs as a sign of mental illness back in 2021. When Twitter first introduced the hexagonal NFT profile pictures to Twitter Blue subscribers, Musk immediately called them "annoying", saying that the feature was a waste of engineering resources. The most notable example of all is when he changed his Twitter profile pic to a Bored Ape NFT in May before tweeting: "I dunno … seems kinda fungible".

However, the famous billionaire seems to have taken a more positive view of NFTs lately. And apparently, his shift in opinion has very much to do with Reddit's smashing success with digital collectibles.

"No doubt, you can bet that Elon and his team are seeing what's happening with Reddit and thinking about the possibilities with Twitter," said Mahesh Vellanki, managing partner at crypto venture firm SuperLayer. "We are entering a new world, and you can bet that digital assets will play a more prominent role on Twitter".

Whether the latest move is business-driven or not (it probably is), the introduction of NFT Tweet Tiles is a great way for the once-NFT-critic billionaire to win over NFT lovers on Twitter. Ultimately, it will be interesting to see what other NFT or crypto plans Musk has in place for his social network down the road.
