XFL files for trademark application to enter the metaverse and NFT space
The XFL, an American professional football minor league, has filed for a trademark for "XFL," signaling that it intends to enter the metaverse and the world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
According to trademark attorney Mike Kondoudis, on April 4 the XFL filed multiple trademark applications for the terms “X” and “XFL”. The official trademark document suggests that the company is aiming to incorporate an NFT marketplace, along with virtual goods and experiences into its future plans. The trademark application was submitted to the USPTO on July 21. Soon, the XFL will offer:
- Virtual goods in the nature of clothing, metahumans, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and virtual tokens, all for use in the metaverse.
- Downloadable images, audio, video, music, artwork, text, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), or a combination thereof, all featuring content in the field of sports and entertainment and all for use in the metaverse.
- Subscription to a television channel, namely, continuing subscription video program in the field of sports broadcast over the internet.
- Entertainment services, namely, providing online metaverses, and virtual worlds for sports, recreational, leisure, or entertainment purposes.
The XFL returned for its second season in 2020, 19 years after its debut. It featured eight clubs and had significant support from the fanbases of those teams. Unfortunately, the company, like many others, was forced to declare bankruptcy as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since that time, XFL owners have been planning a big comeback for the 2023 season, and joining the metaverse is a big part of that.
Josh Gerben, a trademark attorney, announced the news on Twitter :
The sports industry is making an impression on Web3. As more metaverse and NFT-related trademarks are submitted, we may expect more NFTs to be issued, as well as new virtual worlds that will make it easier for consumers to engage with their favourite athletes.
Recently, the PGA filed a new Web3 trademark registration for its logo after revealing that it is completing partnerships with Sorare and Autograph to create golf NFTs.
